Women suffer due to gender pay gap

Date Added: April 21, 2008 10:08:39 AM

Category: Business & Economy: Employment and Work
The office for National Statistics has found that the gender pay gap is biggest for women in their 40's who earn on average 20% less than their male counterparts. It was discovered that as women get older the pay gap between themselves and their fellow male employees widens starting off when they are in their 20's as just a 1% difference. Women who work in male dominated industries such as painting and decorating face getting paid 25% less than a male in the same industry. A spokeswoman from Unison said, “It is 30 years since equal pay became the law of the land- how much longer do women have to wait? Employers should not be allowed to get away with this type of unlawful discrimination and the government should take action to make sure they don’t." Chris Crawford is the MD of BD Recruitment a specialist recruiter for the creative, marketing and technical industries, based in Manchester, UK.
